PHOTOPHOBIA (Intolerance of light)


Belladonna: Intolerance of light due to inflammation resulting in dry and injected eyes without lachrymation. It is the head remedy for photophobia.

Graphites: Extreme photophobia in sunlight with copious lachrymation.

Nux Vom: Leading remedy for photophobia due to excessive use of alcohol or following night's debauch. Excessive drinking may cause atrophy of the optic nerve, which will be cured by this remedy. Irritation of the brain and nerves is also cured by this medicine.

Mercurius: The light of fire dazzles the eyes greatly. The eyes cannot bear the light of fire or day- light.

Aconite N: Photophobia with painful inflammation of the eyes from cold or from acrid substance in the eyes.

Glonoine: Should be tried when Belladonna fails.

Rhus Tox: Great intolerance of light so much so that the eyes cannot be opened even at night. It has oedematous swelling of the eyes with redness and acrid discharge.

Euphrasia: Photophobia with profuse excoriating discharge from eyes. Cannot bear artificial light.

Calcarea Carb: Cannot even stand ordinary light; standing in sunlight is simply impossible.
